David Crockett Birthplace: Born on the Nolichucky

Tennessee

David Crockett was born on August seventeenth, seventeen eighty-six, in a cabin near Limestone, Tennessee, on the banks of the Nolichucky River, the same river system that runs through this valley. His father, John Crockett, later ran a tavern at Morristown. The family moved frequently through the Tennessee frontier, and David grew up hunting and working odd jobs, with little formal schooling.

He became a militiaman under Andrew Jackson, then a justice of the peace, then a state legislator, and eventually a congressman from Tennessee. But his fame rested on something else: the legend of the frontiersman, the bear hunter, the man who represented the backcountry with rough honesty. He died at the Alamo on March sixth, eighteen thirty-six. The state park on the Nolichucky preserves the site with a replica cabin and visitor center, and was closed after Hurricane Helene caused severe flooding damage in September twenty twenty-four.
