East Ridge, Tennessee
Near Chattanooga, Tennessee
East Ridge is a city of about twenty-two thousand on the eastern edge of Chattanooga, separated from the larger city only by a political boundary. It grew rapidly as a suburb after World War Two, incorporated in nineteen twenty-one. East Ridge takes its name from its spot just east of Missionary Ridge, where on November twenty-fifth, eighteen sixty-three, Union troops under General George Thomas charged uphill and broke the Confederate line, one of the most remarkable infantry charges of the Civil War.
