Hartford, Tennessee
Tennessee
Hartford sits at the mouth of a gorge where the Pigeon River cuts through the Cherokee National Forest on its way out of the Great Smoky Mountains. For centuries the Cherokee used this river corridor for travel and trade. European settlers arrived in the late seventeen hundreds and logged the surrounding ridges heavily throughout the following century.
Then came a different kind of traffic. After outfitters began running organized rafting trips here in the late nineteen seventies, Hartford became one of the premier whitewater destinations in the entire Southeast. Controlled releases from the upstream dam on the Pigeon River create reliable Class Three and Four rapids through the gorge.
Today the small community is home almost entirely to outfitters and launch sites, making Hartford a place where the economy, the ecology, and the river are essentially one and the same.
