Jacksboro, Tennessee
Tennessee
Jacksboro has been the seat of Campbell County since eighteen oh six, when a local landowner named Hugh Montgomery deeded the land for the town square. The Tennessee General Assembly had carved Campbell County out of Anderson and Claiborne Counties that same year, naming it for Colonel Arthur Campbell, a Revolutionary War officer and Indian fighter on the frontier. The town originally went by Walnut Grove, then was renamed Jacksonboro in honor of Andrew Jackson in eighteen nineteen, about a decade before Jackson reached the presidency.
The name was eventually shortened to Jacksboro. Campbell County sits astride the Cumberland Mountains, and coal would later define it, but Jacksboro itself stayed a quiet courthouse town while the mining boomtowns grew up around it.
