Kodak, Tennessee

Near Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

The community of Kodak, in Sevier County, carries one of the more accidental place names in Tennessee. In eighteen ninety-two, Harvey Underwood was appointed postmaster and needed to register a name with the federal government. He liked the brand-new camera company name, founded by George Eastman just four years earlier, and wrote to Eastman for permission to use it.

Eastman agreed. The community stuck with it. Kodak sits in northern Sevier County near the French Broad River, at the edge of what would later become the gateway corridor to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

A Treaty of Dumplin Creek was signed near here in seventeen eighty-five, one of the earliest agreements between early settlers and the Cherokee nation.
