Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church
Tennessee
The Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church, whose congregation was organized in eighteen twenty, stands at one of the earliest settled spots in upper East Tennessee. A congregation had gathered here even earlier, and the brick meetinghouse they completed in eighteen forty-five is among the oldest church buildings surviving in the region. It served the community through the great wave of Scots-Irish migration into the Appalachian valleys, when Presbyterian churches anchored the social and spiritual lives of the settlements.
The present building replaced a log structure, and its simple Federal-style brickwork reflects the modest means and serious faith of its congregation. The church was dedicated in eighteen forty-six. Today it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserved as markers of the religious and cultural roots of the Kingsport area.
