Rutherford County Courthouse
Tennessee
The Rutherford County Courthouse in Murfreesboro, Tennessee is one of the most distinctive public buildings in Middle Tennessee. Completed in eighteen fifty-nine, it sits at the center of the town square with a prominent clock tower that has kept time for the city for over a century and a half. Murfreesboro served briefly as the state capital of Tennessee from eighteen eighteen to eighteen twenty-six, and the courthouse square has been the civic heart of the region ever since.
The building survived the Civil War, during which Murfreesboro changed hands multiple times and was occupied by Union forces. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its architectural integrity and its role as a continuous anchor of county governance.
