South Cumberland State Park
Tennessee
South Cumberland State Park is a sprawling collection of natural areas on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee, spread across multiple counties with no single contiguous boundary. The park encompasses some of the most dramatic geology in the eastern United States, including the Savage Gulf area, now its own state park, a series of gorges that cut deep into the sandstone plateau, and Foster Falls, the tallest waterfall in the park, that drops into a sheer-walled gorge. The plateau's remote terrain sheltered isolated communities for generations and contains the Grundy Forest state natural area. The park preserves a landscape that remained largely wild while the rest of Middle Tennessee was settled and farmed, a remnant of the ancient plateau that once stretched unbroken across this part of the Appalachian spine.
