The April Two Thousand Six Tornado
Tennessee
This marker remembers those who died when a violent tornado tore through Dyer County on the second of April, two thousand six.
That night a powerful supercell crossed the Mississippi River and dropped a tornado rated F three on the Fujita scale. It traveled roughly eighteen miles before dissipating just east of Newbern. North of nearby Dyersburg the storm was especially deadly, killing sixteen people and injuring about seventy more. It was part of a wider outbreak across northeast Arkansas, the Missouri Bootheel, and West Tennessee that killed twenty six people in a single night.
Whole neighborhoods were flattened in minutes. Communities here spent years rebuilding, and this memorial keeps the names of the lost from fading into a statistic, a quiet reminder of one of the deadliest nights this corner of Tennessee has known.
