Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site

Tennessee

The Tipton-Haynes farm south of Johnson City, Tennessee, preserves one of the most politically charged properties in Appalachian history. John Tipton settled here around seventeen eighty-four, and in February of seventeen eighty-eight he captured John Sevier's enslaved workers as payment for a debt, then repelled Sevier's armed attempt to reclaim them in what became known as the Battle of the Lost State of Franklin. Sevier had led the breakaway State of Franklin, which briefly governed this part of Tennessee before Congress rejected it.

Tipton was Franklin's most powerful opponent. The farm passed later to Landon Carter Haynes, a Confederate senator. Today the site preserves a log house, barn, cave, and several outbuildings spanning nearly a century of East Tennessee frontier and antebellum life, all owned by the Tennessee Historical Commission and run by a local association.
