American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, Amarillo
Texas
Amarillo is home to the American Quarter Horse Association, which has headquartered here for decades, and the Hall of Fame and Museum opened alongside it in nineteen ninety-one after a groundbreaking in nineteen eighty-nine. The Quarter Horse is one of the most popular horse breeds in the world, built for short bursts of speed and the demands of working cattle country. The museum holds paintings, bronzes, photographs, and other artifacts.
The Grand Hall at the center features soaring stone columns and plaques for every inductee, horse and human alike. The first two individuals inducted in nineteen eighty-two were Bob Denhardt and Ernest Browning, who were instrumental in founding the association in nineteen forty. Amarillo's place at the heart of the Texas Panhandle cattle economy made it the natural home for the breed's official history.
