Bill Minter and the Aransas Pass Shrimp Industry
Texas
Before nineteen thirteen, shrimping in Aransas Pass was a casual affair. George Edward Minter, known to everyone as Bill, changed that. Starting that year, Minter built what grew into a major commercial shrimping operation, pioneering the harvesting, processing, and distribution of Gulf shrimp from this Texas coastal town.
The work was never easy. Hurricanes periodically devastated the fleet and the waterfront infrastructure. The crash of nineteen twenty-nine wiped out capital and markets.
Minter rebuilt each time, anchoring Aransas Pass's identity to the sea. His enterprise helped establish the Gulf Coast shrimping industry as a commercial force, and the patterns he set, the boats, the docks, the ice houses, became the template for towns up and down the coast. Aransas Pass still calls itself the Shrimping Capital of Texas, a title tied to an industry Minter helped build more than a century ago.
