Canadian, Texas, River Town on the Caprock Edge

Texas

Canadian, Texas sits at the edge of the Llano Estacado where the Canadian River has carved a wide red valley through the Panhandle plains. The town was born in eighteen eighty-seven when the Southern Kansas Railway, a Santa Fe subsidiary, pushed its tracks into Hemphill County and needed a county seat to anchor the territory. Canadian was chosen for its position near the river, and cattle ranching was already the established economy.

The Canadian River valley had long been Comanche country, and Buffalo Soldiers garrisoned at Fort Elliott, to the south, patrolled the transitional years between the cattle-drive era and the homestead era. Today Canadian is known as the "River Valley of the Texas Panhandle," a lush green corridor of cottonwoods and red canyon walls in a landscape that is otherwise strikingly flat.
