Dallas Union Station

Texas

By nineteen twelve, Dallas had a tangle of competing railroad depots scattered across downtown, creating chaos for passengers and pedestrians alike. The Dallas Union Terminal Company was chartered that year to fix it. Architect Jarvis Hunt designed a Beaux-Arts terminal in red Texas granite and terracotta, with a three-story waiting room under forty-eight-foot ceilings and sweeping arched windows.

Construction ran from nineteen fourteen to nineteen sixteen at a cost of one point three million dollars. At its peak in the nineteen twenties, eighty trains a day passed through. The station is a Dallas landmark, a Texas historic landmark, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today it serves Amtrak's Texas Eagle and Trinity Railway Express, still wearing the same Beaux-Arts limestone face it has worn for over a century.
