Fouke Community: Center of Wood County
Near Tyler, Texas
Three miles northeast of Crow in southeastern Wood County, a small community took shape as early as eighteen sixty-six under the name Center. By around eighteen seventy-three the residents had pooled their resources to build a log structure that served the community as church, school, and gathering hall all at once, the typical frontier arrangement when a settlement was too small to afford separate buildings for each purpose.
The community later took the name Fouke. Like many rural East Texas settlements, it grew up around the practical needs of farming families who needed a shared space before they needed much else. Its origins reflect the post-Civil War resettlement of northeastern Texas, when communities like this one were taking root across the Piney Woods region.
