George Floyd: Third Ward Houston, Born October Fourteenth, Nineteen Seventy-Three
Texas
George Perry Floyd Jr. was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on October fourteenth, nineteen seventy-three. His family moved to Houston when he was a small child, and he grew up in Cuney Homes, a public housing project in the Third Ward that the neighborhood knew as the Bricks. He attended Jack Yates High School, three blocks from Emancipation Park, and played power forward on the basketball team and tight end on the football squad. The neighborhood called him Big Floyd.
He moved to Minneapolis in twenty fourteen seeking work, after a period of legal difficulties in Houston. On May twenty-fifth, twenty twenty, he was killed in Minneapolis. A Minneapolis police officer placed his knee on Floyd's neck and held it there while bystanders recorded the event on their phones. How long the restraint lasted is a matter of documented record with two versions: the initial figure reported was eight minutes and forty-six seconds. The Hennepin County District Attorney later corrected the time to nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds. Both versions are in the official record. The bystander videos were seen by hundreds of millions of people within days. The protests that followed were the largest in American history.
The Third Ward that Floyd grew up in is not incidental to this story. Cuney Homes was built in nineteen thirty-eight as segregated public housing for Black residents displaced by urban renewal. It sits on Emancipation Avenue, one block from the park that four formerly enslaved men purchased in eighteen seventy-two. Jack Yates High School, named for one of those four founders, is three blocks away. Texas Southern University, the historically Black university where the nineteen sixty-seven student uprising occurred, is one mile south.
The geography is dense with history. Floyd grew up at the center of it, in a neighborhood that had been shaped by a century of policies, geographies, and exclusions. That context does not explain what happened in Minneapolis on May twenty-fifth, twenty twenty. But it is the ground the story grows from.
