Happy, Texas
Texas
Happy, Texas has one of the more honest names in the Panhandle. The town takes it from Happy Draw, a dry creek where trail-driving cowboys in the eighteen eighties were genuinely elated to find standing water in the middle of a landscape that offered very little. Hugh Currie established a homestead and post office by that draw in eighteen ninety-one.
When the Santa Fe Railroad extended south from Canyon in nineteen oh six, it bypassed the original site by two miles. Promoters platted a new town by the tracks, people followed the rail line west, and by nineteen oh seven the post office had relocated to the new Happy. The railroad giveth; the railroad decideth where you live.
