League City: Where the Railroad Met the Space Race

Texas

League City takes its name from J. C. League, a Galveston businessman who bought property along the Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad in the early eighteen nineties and began selling lots.

He laid out the townsite, and the community took his name in place of Clear Creek. The town sat quiet for decades until the early nineteen sixties, when NASA began building the Manned Spacecraft Center just to the north. Almost overnight the communities around Clear Lake, including League City, became suburbs for engineers and astronauts.

Astronauts such as Doug Hurley, Karen Nyberg, and Michael Barratt have called League City home.
