Mount Pleasant Colored School, Weatherford
Texas
For decades, this site in Weatherford held the only school available to African American children in the city. Built in nineteen nineteen on land donated back in eighteen eighty-six by J. R.
Couts, the Weatherford Colored School was a modest school building that served the Black community through the era of legal segregation. In nineteen thirty-six it was renamed Mount Pleasant Colored School. As enrollment grew, an additional frame building was added to handle the overflow.
The school operated under the constraints of Jim Crow, providing education to students who were barred by law from attending the white schools nearby. It stands as a record of both the determination of Weatherford's Black community to educate their children and the systemic inequality they were forced to navigate in Parker County.
