New Deal, Texas
Near Lubbock, Texas
New Deal, Texas is not named for a president's policy package by accident. In nineteen thirty-five, as Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal programs were reshaping rural America through crop supports, rural electrification, and work relief, four struggling school districts in Lubbock County, Caldwell, Center, Grovesville, and Monroe, merged into a single new district and chose a name that reflected their moment. The post office followed in nineteen forty-nine, making the name official for the town that had grown up along the old Santa Fe rail corridor since nineteen oh nine. The name captures something true about this landscape: the South Plains in the nineteen thirties were a place where federal intervention was the difference between staying and leaving.
