San Benito: Freddy Fender's Town

Near Brownsville, Texas

San Benito is the birthplace of Baldemar Garza Huerta, who the world knows as Freddy Fender. He was born here on June fourth, nineteen thirty-seven, grew up in deep poverty as a migrant farm worker, and became one of the most distinctive voices in American popular music.

Fender's blend of rock, country, and Tex-Mex gave him a singular sound, and his nineteen seventy-five hit Before the Next Teardrop Falls reached number one on both the pop and country charts simultaneously, a rare crossover achievement. He won a Grammy and later became part of the Texas Tornados supergroup. San Benito honors him on the city's water tower, renamed the street where he grew up Freddy Fender Lane, and buried him in the local memorial park with an elaborate gravestone that tells his full story. In two thousand twenty-three, the state of Texas placed a historical marker at his childhood home.
