San Clemente Mission: Texas's First East of the Pecos

Texas

About ten miles southeast of this marker, somewhere near present-day Ballinger by some accounts, Spanish missionaries built what historians believe was the first mission established in Texas east of the Pecos River. San Clemente was a hastily constructed two-room structure, put up quickly to establish a Spanish presence among Native peoples in the region, though scholars still debate the precise site, with some placing it farther south near Junction.

Spanish missionary expansion into Texas in the late sixteen hundreds was driven by competition with France and by the Catholic Church's ambition to bring indigenous communities into the mission system. San Clemente did not last long, but its establishment marks an early and often-overlooked chapter in the Spanish colonization of Texas, predating the better-known missions of San Antonio by decades.
