Seaholm Power Plant: Austin's Industrial Landmark
Texas
The Seaholm Power Plant anchors the western edge of downtown Austin as a monument to the city's century of self-reliance in electricity. Electric power came to Austin in eighteen ninety-five, generated by a dam on the Colorado River, making it one of the earliest municipally owned electric systems in the South. The current Seaholm complex was built in nineteen fifty-one, a streamlined Art Moderne structure that served Austin Energy for decades.
The city has owned its own generation and distribution system continuously, a rare model of public utility ownership. After the plant retired, Austin preserved the building and redeveloped it as a mixed-use anchor for the Seaholm District, opening in twenty fifteen. The massive turbine hall now houses a retail and office complex, while the Art Moderne facade and smokestack remain as landmarks of the city's industrial past.
