Woodland: Sam Houston's Dogtrot House in Huntsville

Texas

Sam Houston and his wife Margaret built Woodland in stages beginning around eighteen forty-seven, a classic dogtrot house: two log chambers connected by an open central breezeway, brick chimneys at each end. It served as their town home in Huntsville while Houston sat in the United States Senate from eighteen forty-six to eighteen fifty-nine. After Houston was elected governor in eighteen fifty-nine and Texas moved toward secession, he refused to swear the Confederate loyalty oath and was removed from office.

He came back to Huntsville and died in a second house nearby in eighteen sixty-three. Woodland is a National Historic Landmark and part of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum.
