America First Field, Real Salt Lake

Near Salt Lake City, Utah

The stadium to your east is America First Field, home of Real Salt Lake, and it holds a distinction that matters in American soccer history: it is one of the first soccer-specific stadiums in the United States actually built for the sport, designed around the pitch rather than retrofitted from a football oval.

Real Salt Lake was founded in two thousand four and played its first seasons at Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus while the new ground took shape. Construction in Sandy took a little more than two years and cost one hundred ten million dollars. The stadium opened on October ninth, two thousand eight, with a capacity of twenty thousand two hundred thirteen. The design wraps the seats tightly around the field, so even the upper rows feel close to the action in a way that most American sports venues do not.

The club did not waste time justifying the investment. In two thousand nine, just one year after moving in, Real Salt Lake won the MLS Cup championship, defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy on penalty kicks in a match that went to sudden death. It remains one of the most dramatic finals in league history and the only MLS Cup won by a Utah team.

The stadium has hosted United States men's and women's national team matches, World Cup qualifying games, and the two thousand nine MLS All-Star Game. Originally named Rio Tinto Stadium after the Anglo-Australian mining company, the venue rebranded as America First Field in twenty twenty-two.

For a city not traditionally associated with soccer culture, Salt Lake Valley has produced something genuine here: a purpose-built ground in the suburbs, a passionate supporter culture, and one championship banner already hanging from the rafters.
