Chief Terikee
Near Ogden, Utah
On the evening of September sixteenth, eighteen fifty, a Shoshone leader named Terikee was driving his ponies out of a settler's unfenced cornfield right around here, on Four Mile Creek. He was known among the Mormon pioneers as a friendly man, and he had just come back from paying his respects to Lorin Farr over in Ogden.
A settler named Urban Stewart heard rustling in the dark, grabbed his rifle, and fired blindly toward the sound. He killed the chief.
The Shoshone demanded Stewart be handed over or they would burn Ogden to the ground. About a hundred and fifty men rode up from Salt Lake City. Before they arrived, Terikee's band killed a settler named Campbell, took their chief's body, and retreated north. Stewart was never punished. In twenty twenty-one, the city of Harrisville, the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, and the Weber County Heritage Foundation came together here to rededicate his monument and finally make peace.
