Midway Social Hall

Near Park City, Utah

This sturdy little building on Main Street in Midway went up in eighteen ninety-eight, and it was the beating heart of this Swiss farming valley for more than forty years. Mormon settlers built it from a strange local stone they called pot rock, a porous limestone laid down by the hot springs that bubble up all over this part of the Wasatch Back. Inside these walls there were operas and plays, banquets and political speeches, and most of all the Saturday night dances that drew families down from the surrounding farms.

It served as the town's main gathering place until nineteen forty, when a proper town hall finally took over. Later the church turned it into a storehouse and cannery. It is one of the social halls from this era that still stand. Today the Midway Boosters keep it alive for Swiss Days and the ringing of the Swiss bells.
