The Cave of Death
Near Provo, Utah
This quiet memorial on the slopes of Y Mountain remembers a tragedy that struck a group of young friends in the small hours of August eighteenth, two thousand five. Earlier that night, over dinner, one of them had described an obscure local cavern nicknamed Gollum's Cave. Half joking, the group dubbed it the Cave of Death.
Around three in the morning, five of them went in to explore. Deep inside, a narrow water-filled passage, scarcely large enough to wriggle through, connected one chamber to another. Four of the friends drowned in that submerged tunnel. Their names were Jennifer Galbraith, Scott McDonald, Ariel Singer, and Blake Donner. A companion who had stayed behind raised the alarm only after dawn. The marker stands so that the four who never came out of the mountain are not forgotten.
