The Settling of Ferron
Utah
This marker remembers the first settlement of Ferron, Utah, in early December of eighteen seventy-seven. The town owes its beginning to a call from the Latter-day Saint church, asking families in Sanpete County to cross east over the Wasatch Mountains and put down roots in Castle Valley. The first homesteaders, three families in all, set out on November fifteenth and arrived after roughly twenty-one hard days on the trail.
They dug into the earth, building dugout shelters along Ferron Creek to survive that first winter, then turned to farming the valley floor. Notably, this was among the last settlements that Brigham Young called into being. He had directed the Castle Valley colonization shortly before his death in August of that same year.
