Utah Field House of Natural History: Dinosaur Country

Utah

Vernal, Utah, sits at the edge of one of the richest dinosaur fossil deposits in the world, and the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum has been interpreting those deposits since nineteen forty-eight. The museum sits in downtown Vernal and serves as the interpretive gateway to Dinosaur National Monument, whose Quarry Exhibit Hall is a short drive to the east. The Field House's grounds feature full-scale dinosaur sculptures and the building houses fossil exhibits drawn directly from northeastern Utah's Morrison Formation, the same Jurassic mudstone that has yielded some of the most complete dinosaur skeletons ever found, including Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Diplodocus. Vernal itself, sometimes called Dinosaurland, leans fully into the prehistoric identity: there is a life-size pink Tyrannosaurus at the gas station and dinosaur imagery on everything from the water tower to the welcome signs.
