Former Salmond Covered Bridge Site

Near Woodstock, Vermont

A wooden covered bridge once stood near here, a single span about fifty-four feet long, built in the eighteen seventies by James Tasker. Tasker was one of New England's legendary bridge builders, a largely self-taught craftsman who could hold the geometry of a multiple kingpost truss in his head. This one originally carried a country road over the Black River in Weathersfield.

In nineteen fifty-nine, the bridge was moved out of the way of a flood control project, and for more than twenty years it served the town as a humble storage shed. Then, in nineteen eighty-six, it was restored and relocated again to a spot over Sherman Brook, where it became a covered bridge worth visiting once more. A reminder that an old Vermont bridge can be picked up, carried, and given a second life.
