Milton Speedway

Near Burlington, Vermont

On the north runway of a defunct airport just outside Milton, Vermont once roared one of New England's great quarter mile drag strips. In nineteen sixty three, local men opened what is described as Vermont's first drag strip, giving young racers a safer place to run flat out than the public roads. For about eight years it ran a weekly program, and well-known drivers are said to have come north to compete.

In its heyday Vermont had many circle and dirt tracks. The Milton strip eventually shut down, but for a generation of Vermonters, the smell of burning rubber on a summer night was the sound of the modern age arriving in farm country.
