Benita Fitzgerald Drive — Olympic Gold Medalist
Virginia
This road was named in honor of Benita Fitzgerald, who grew up in Dale City, Virginia, and became one of the most decorated American sprinters of her era. At the nineteen eighty-four Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Fitzgerald won gold in the one hundred meter hurdles, becoming an American Olympic champion in that event. She had also claimed the Pan American Games title in nineteen eighty-three.
After retiring from competition, Fitzgerald became a prominent figure in sports administration and later led a service organization. The street named for her here stands as a lasting local tribute to a world-class athlete who called this corner of Northern Virginia home.
