Greensville County Courthouse

Virginia

The Greensville County Courthouse complex in Emporia has anchored the seat of county government since seventeen eighty-seven. The main courthouse, a painted brick Palladian building, was constructed in eighteen thirty-four and later gained an Ionic portico in the early twentieth century when the wings were raised and the building remodeled. The complex includes a clerk's office from eighteen ninety-four and a former bank building from nineteen hundred, with a remarkable interior of locally produced decorative stamped sheet metal.

Greensville County was formed in seventeen eighty-one from Brunswick County. The entire complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen eighty-three and remains in use as the active seat of county government.
