Stonewall Jackson's Winchester Winter
Near Front Royal, Virginia
From November eighteen sixty-one through March eighteen sixty-two, Confederate General Thomas Jackson used this Gothic Revival house on Braddock Street as his headquarters. The house belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Moore, who commanded the Fourth Virginia Infantry; Moore offered his home to Jackson, who arrived to defend the Shenandoah Valley against Union encroachment. Jackson's wife Mary Anna joined him here in December, giving the house an odd domestic warmth amid the war.
From these rooms Jackson planned the Romney Expedition and studied the Valley terrain he would use to run circles around three Union armies the following spring. Items connected to Jackson and his staff are displayed inside. Winchester would change hands as many as seventy-two times over the course of the war.
