Woodrow Wilson Birthplace, Staunton

Virginia

Staunton, Virginia, is the birthplace of the twenty-eighth president. Woodrow Wilson was born on December twenty-eighth, eighteen fifty-six, in the Presbyterian manse on Coalter Street, where his father served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. The family left in eighteen fifty-eight, when Wilson was still a toddler, moving first to Georgia, then to South Carolina and North Carolina, so Wilson did not grow up in Staunton. But the house where he entered the world is still standing.

The Victorian home, built in eighteen forty-six, is now the centerpiece of the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum. Eight galleries trace Wilson's arc from Shenandoah Valley minister's son to Princeton president to New Jersey governor to the White House, covering the Federal Reserve, women's suffrage, the Great War, and his doomed campaign for the League of Nations.

Wilson's presidential limousine, a Pierce-Arrow touring car, is on display at the museum.
