Gospodor Monument Park

Washington

Just off the interstate near Toledo, Washington stands one of the Pacific Northwest's more unusual roadside memorials. Dominic Gospodor was a Seattle-area entrepreneur who, in two thousand two, began constructing a park of giant concrete monuments on columns to honor figures he felt history had overlooked. His first tributes went to Holocaust victims, Mother Teresa, and Jesus Christ.

He later added memorials to Chief Seattle, Susan B. Anthony, and others. Gospodor died in two thousand ten, and care for the monuments gradually declined.

The Cowlitz Tribe, which now owns the property, has expressed more interest in preserving the land as conservation land than maintaining the aging concrete columns.
