Lumen Field
Near Woodinville, Washington
The stadium on your left replaced a dome that fell in under twenty seconds. What rose in its place became one of the loudest buildings in American sports.
Lumen Field opened on July twentieth, two thousand two, built on the footprint of the old Kingdome site. The driving force behind its construction was Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who in nineteen ninety-seven agreed to buy the Seattle Seahawks, keep them in Seattle, and contribute roughly one hundred thirty million dollars toward a new stadium, provided Washington State voters would approve three hundred million dollars in public funding. They did, narrowly, and construction began. The stadium cost approximately four hundred thirty million dollars in total and was designed specifically to maximize crowd noise, with steep sideline seating and a partial roof that funnels and reflects sound back onto the field.
It worked. On December second, two thousand thirteen, the crowd at what was then called CenturyLink Field generated a noise level of one hundred thirty-seven point six decibels, setting a Guinness World Record for stadium crowd noise. Fans were so synchronized in their stomping during a Monday Night Football game in two thousand eleven that seismographs registered what appeared to be a minor earthquake. The Seahawks fanbase, long known as the Twelfth Man, had turned passive attendance into a tactical weapon: visiting teams ran more false-start penalties at this stadium than anywhere else in the league.
The Seahawks won Super Bowl Forty-Eight here in spirit if not in geography, playing the February two thousand fourteen game in New Jersey, where they beat the Denver Broncos forty-three to eight in the most lopsided Super Bowl in the sport's modern history. They returned to the Super Bowl the following year, losing to the New England Patriots on a goal-line interception in the final seconds that became one of the most debated play-calls in football history.
The stadium has carried several names, most recently Lumen Field since two thousand twenty. It also serves as the home of Seattle Sounders FC, who won the MLS Cup in two thousand sixteen, two thousand nineteen, and two thousand twenty-two.
