Nutty Narrows Bridge, Longview

Washington

In Longview, just ahead, there is a sixty-foot suspension bridge built specifically for squirrels. Contractor Amos Peters built it in nineteen sixty-three, after squirrels kept getting killed crossing Olympia Way between big trees and a nut-rich area. Peters designed it to resemble a tiny suspension bridge, with a deck just wide enough for squirrel traffic.

The bridge received wide attention when it opened. In nineteen eighty-three Peters took it down for repairs, then rededicated it with Chip and Dale from Disneyland on hand along with three hundred children. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in two thousand fourteen, making it possibly the only squirrel crossing in the United States with that distinction.
