Snohomish: River Port, County Seat, Antique Capital
Near Woodinville, Washington
Snohomish was founded in eighteen fifty-nine at the confluence of the Snohomish and Pilchuck rivers, named Cadyville for one of its founders before being renamed in eighteen seventy-one. It served as the county seat of Snohomish County from eighteen sixty-one until eighteen ninety-seven, when the railroad boomtown of Everett took the title away. Today the city of about ten thousand is known across the Pacific Northwest as the Antique Capital of the Northwest, its Victorian-era downtown, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, packed with dealers and galleries. The old commercial blocks that once served loggers and river-trade merchants now serve a different kind of traffic entirely.
