EAA Aviation Museum: Where Half a Million Pilots Come to Oshkosh
Wisconsin
Paul Poberezny founded the Experimental Aircraft Association in nineteen fifty-three, in the basement of his home in Hales Corners, Wisconsin. He wanted a community for people who built their own planes. What he created became something much larger.
The EAA's annual fly-in moved to Oshkosh's Wittman Regional Airport in nineteen seventy, and the event has been growing ever since. Today, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh draws more than five hundred thousand visitors every late July, making it the busiest week in the history of the airfield. The permanent museum holds over two hundred aircraft, warbirds, homebuilts, antiques, and record-setters.
It opened its current facility in nineteen eighty-three. Oshkosh, for one week a year, becomes the busiest airspace in the world.
