First Episcopal Mission in Wisconsin

Near Green Bay, Wisconsin

Near this site stood the first Episcopal mission in Wisconsin, founded in the eighteen twenties by the Reverend Richard Fish Cadle. Cadle was a New York born priest, Columbia educated, who came west to the Green Bay area when this was still Michigan Territory. There he led an Indian mission school and helped establish Christ Church for the early settlers.

His work did not end here. In eighteen forty-one, Bishop Jackson Kemper named Cadle superior of a new religious brotherhood proposed by the young missionary James Lloyd Breck. Out of that brotherhood grew Nashotah House, the Episcopal seminary that still trains clergy in Wisconsin today. So this quiet Green Bay site marks the beginning of a denomination's long presence in the state. The marker here was erected in nineteen twenty-nine.
