Yorkville Number Four School

Wisconsin

This one-room Italianate schoolhouse has stood at the center of the Yorkville community since eighteen eighty-five, when it was built at a time rural Wisconsin education meant one teacher, one room, and children of all ages learning side by side.

One-room schoolhouses like this one were more than classrooms. They doubled as meeting halls for the surrounding farms, hosted community gatherings, and served as the social anchor for townships spread too thin to support anything larger. Yorkville Number Four was one of many numbered district schools carved across Racine County in the nineteenth century, each assigned to its township section. Most were torn down or repurposed long ago. This one survived, its Italianate detailing a reminder that even a rural school board in Wisconsin in eighteen eighty-five wanted its building to look like something worth having.
