Bar Nunn, Wyoming
Near Casper, Wyoming
Bar Nunn is Casper's neighbor and one of Wyoming's stranger origin stories. Romie Nunn, a rancher and businessman who had moved to Casper in nineteen eighteen, bought six hundred and forty acres of surplus land in nineteen fifty-four for twenty thousand five hundred dollars. What he purchased was the original Wardwell Field, Natrona County's first airport, which the Army had abandoned when a newer facility opened.
Nunn dreamed of making it the horse center of the Rockies. That didn't happen. Instead he subdivided the land in nineteen fifty-eight and called it Bar Nunn Ranch, his cattle brand as the name.
By the late seventies the homeowners' association was struggling to get streets plowed and repaired. Their solution was to incorporate as a town. In nineteen eighty-two, they did, built on the runways of a forgotten airport.
