Buffalo Bill Center of the West
Near Cody, Wyoming
Cody, Wyoming, was founded by William F. Cody himself, the frontiersman and showman the world knew as Buffalo Bill. In nineteen seventeen, admirers formed the Buffalo Bill Memorial Association to preserve his legacy, and a small museum opened in nineteen twenty-seven. Over the next century it grew into something far larger: five distinct museums under one roof, making this one of the most comprehensive collections of American West culture anywhere.
The campus holds the Buffalo Bill Museum, the Plains Indians Museum, the Whitney Western Art Museum, the Draper Natural History Museum, and the Cody Firearms Museum. It also houses one of the continent's leading research libraries on the American West. For anyone turning onto US Twenty toward Yellowstone, this is the gateway institution to the entire region.
