Cheyenne Depot Museum
Near Cheyenne, Wyoming
That sandstone building just south of the Lincoln Highway is the Cheyenne Depot, completed in eighteen eighty-seven for the Union Pacific Railroad. Boston architect Henry Van Brunt gave it the rounded arches and heavy stonework of Richardsonian Romanesque, making it one of the finest examples of that style in the entire West. The depot sat on the first transcontinental rail line and served as the gateway for settlers, soldiers, and freight pouring into Wyoming Territory. It is now a National Historic Landmark housing the Cheyenne Depot Museum, which tells the story of the golden age of steam and the men who kept the locomotives running through the high plains winters.
