Jackson Lake Lodge

Wyoming

Jackson Lake Lodge opened in nineteen fifty-five as the centerpiece of a Rockefeller-funded effort to build a world-class park lodge in Grand Teton. John D. Rockefeller Jr.

had spent years quietly buying up private inholdings in the Jackson Hole valley to donate them to the federal government, and the lodge was his vision of how visitors should experience the Tetons. Architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who had already designed the Ahwahnee in Yosemite and lodges at Bryce and Zion, gave the building a modernist concrete frame with towering windows framing the Cathedral Group across the lake. The view from that lobby is considered one of the great designed vistas in the American park system.

The lodge was declared a National Historic Landmark in two thousand three.
