Pahaska Tepee

Wyoming

Just inside the East Entrance of Yellowstone, you are passing Pahaska Tepee, the personal hunting lodge built by William Frederick Cody and completed in nineteen oh five. Buffalo Bill, as the world knew him, had guided wealthy sportsmen through these mountains for years, and he named this place Pahaska, his Lakota nickname meaning Long Hair. The two-story log structure doubled as a resort where tourists could stable their horses before the automobile age changed everything. Buffalo Bill died in nineteen seventeen, but the lodge survived, earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, and still operates as a guest ranch about two miles from the park boundary.
