Sheridan Flouring Mills: Wyoming's Wheat Economy in Brick and Timber
Near Sheridan, Wyoming
Sheridan, Wyoming sits at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains where ranchers and dry-land wheat farmers needed a place to turn their grain into flour. The original mill on this site dates to the late nineteenth century. By the early nineteen hundreds the Sheridan mill had grown into a major regional operation.
Fires destroyed earlier plants, and the company moved to a new site on Coffeen Avenue. The complex built there in the early nineteen twenties still stands, a brick and timber monument to the agricultural economy that once moved through the Powder River country.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the old mill buildings are now one of the more distinctive pieces of industrial architecture in northern Wyoming.
