The Last Cavalry Stable: Newcastle's Depression-Era Relic
Wyoming
The stone building at four oh one Delaware Street in Newcastle is Wyoming's only surviving National Guard cavalry stable, built between nineteen thirty-three and nineteen thirty-six with New Deal funding. It was constructed to house the horses of the local National Guard cavalry unit. By the time the Depression-era stable was finished, mechanization was already rendering cavalry horses obsolete.
The building has served as the Anna Miller Museum since nineteen sixty-six, housing exhibits on Weston County's pioneering history, Native American artifacts, and the coal-mining era that defined this corner of Wyoming. Its listing on the National Register of Historic Places dates to nineteen ninety-four.
